Research Interests: Argumentation as a learning tool

Dr. Kuhn’s research focuses on using argumentation as a learning tool in elementary science classrooms. From 2015-2019, he was the Co-Primary Investigator on two highly competitive grants focused on creating an elementary science curriculum. Multiple school districts in Iowa are now using the curriculum which focuses on students evaluating competing claims and then evaluating the strength and weakness of the evidence that support them.  Before Dr. Kuhn worked at UNI, he was a classroom teacher for fifteen years and in 2012 was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching (PAEMST), which is the highest award bestowed to a math or science teacher in the United States.
